Solanum Lycopersicum
Tomato is an annual vegetable plant, closely related to the potato. It's also known as pomidor, paradajz, paradižnik, golden apple, tomat, jabučica. While traditionally classified as a vegetable, from a botanical perspective, tomatoes are considered fruits.
Tomatoes originated in South America and became known in Europe in the mid-16th century.
The medicinal properties of tomatoes are primarily found in the fruits, which are rich in vitamin C, carotene, vitamin B1, and also contain vitamin E. Tomato juice helps lower blood pressure.
FLAVOR
Tomatoes have a combination of sour and sweet flavors, which depends on factors such as sunlight, rain, temperature, and soil type.
USES
Tomatoes can be used fresh, sliced, dried, or in powder form.
BUYING AND STORAGE
Fresh tomatoes are best kept at room temperature because storing them in the refrigerator for too long can cause them to lose flavor. Dried and powdered tomatoes should be stored in a dry, sealed place.
CULINARY USES
Tomatoes are excellent for sauces like pesto rosso or bolognese, or as toppings for pizza and bruschetta. They can also be used to make soup.
Grilled on the barbecue or in a pan, they are an excellent side dish with meat.
They are perfect for refreshing summer salads combined with mozzarella or fresh vegetables.
In powder form, they can be used for coloring food and decorating dishes.
GOOD for rice dishes, pasta, soups, sauces, food coloring.
PAIRS WELL WITH basil, oregano, onions, cheese, chives, chili, pepper.
